Forehead Reduction Surgery in Boston, MA

WHAT IS FOREHEAD REDUCTION SURGERY?

While there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a large forehead, it can cause insecurity in many of the people that find themselves with one. This can occur naturally or due to hair loss but can usually be treated with a surgical procedure known as forehead reduction. By making use of a technique known as follicle replacement, this treatment can decrease the amount of bare skin on the forehead. If you've been struggling with the size of your forehead, consider scheduling an appointment at DeRosa Center Facial Plastic Surgery & Med Spa in Boston, MA. Our expert team, led by double board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Jaimie DeRosa, can answer any of your questions and concerns, as well as walk you through each step of the process.

Am I A Candidate for FOREHEAD REDUCTION SURGERY?

In most cases, men are not great candidates for forehead reduction surgery. This is due in large part to the fact that most men will eventually suffer from continued hair loss, which will only lessen the results of the procedure. On the other hand, women with high hairlines will typically see incredible results when it comes to forehead reduction surgery. If genetics, alopecia, or previous plastic surgery procedures have affected your hairline, consider contacting our office today.

HOW IS Forehead Reduction Surgery Performed?

At the beginning of the procedure, a small incision will be made right before the hairline begins. Dr. DeRosa will then use this incision to remove a portion of the skin, which will allow her to pull the scalp forward, repositioning the hairline and tightening the skin in the forehead. This technique can be less invasive for patients who are already in possession of a tight scalp. Many patients choose to complement the procedure with an eyebrow lift in order to find the ideal positioning of their eyebrows for their new forehead size. Additionally, once the incision area has healed, we can offer a hair transplant to cover any potential scarring in the area.

What Results Can I Expect from Forehead Reduction Surgery?

Before you leave, our staff will apply bandages to the incision site to keep it clean and attempt to control any potential swelling. In the days following the procedure, patients may notice moderate swelling and/or bruising in the affected area. To assist in this process, patients should try to keep their head elevated at a 45-degree angle for the first few days after the surgery. Most people are able to resume light work and activities, such as driving, within about 3 – 4 days.

Roughly a week after the procedure, patients will be ready to have their surgical staples removed and return to their normal daily lives. The second layer of stitches will naturally fall out around 1 – 2 weeks later. As far as the scar is concerned, it can appear red and elevated for 2 – 6 months before it completely heals. Results are generally noticeable immediately after the conclusion of the surgery with final results being visible 12 – 18 months later.

FOREHEAD REDUCTION FAQs

Will my scars be visible after forehead reduction surgery?
While Dr. DeRosa will do her best to limit scarring, it can be impossible to predict exactly how the body will respond after the surgery. Some patients naturally heal better than others, which can make it easier for them to avoid scars. Additionally, patients with excessive loose skin and/or a significantly raised hairline will have greater risks in terms of scarring. By scheduling hair transplantation as a follow-up procedure, we can seamlessly hide any visible scars in the area.

Should I have forehead reduction surgery or a hair transplant first?
If forehead reduction surgery is not performed before a hair transplant, it can cause damage to the newly transplanted grafts. For this reason, we will always perform forehead reduction surgery first. When the incision area has completely healed, we can perform a hair transplant to hide any scarring caused by the surgery.

Can I loosen a tight scalp during forehead reduction surgery?
This procedure cannot loosen the skin on the scalp. However, our team can suggest exercises that are meant to manually move your scalp. Through the continued application, these exercises can often add some mobility to tight scalps.
