Below, we explore possible side effects of wrinkle relaxers and how icing the treatment area may minimize discomfort. Call The DeRosa Center to schedule a BOTOX consultation and learn more.
BOTOX side effects
Wrinkle relaxers like BOTOX smooth out fine lines by temporarily paralyzing the underlying muscles. Though some people are intimidated by the injection process, treatment is quick and relatively painless. BOTOX is also safer and less invasive than options like facial plastic surgery.
There is always a risk of side effects with injections. Patients must undergo a consultation to ensure they are healthy enough for treatment and to understand the potential risks. Common BOTOX side effects are mild and temporary but may include any of the following:
-
Redness
-
Bruising
-
Swelling
-
Tingling or numbness
-
Headache
Serious side effects are rare but can occur during BOTOX recovery. Please inform our team about any allergies or medical conditions before undergoing treatment. Call our Boston cosmetic surgeon right away if you experience any of the following:
-
Difficulty speaking or swallowing
-
Vision problems
-
Drooping eyelids
-
Allergic reaction
Can you ice after BOTOX?
Patients may return to work and other normal activities after getting wrinkle relaxers. Of course, our professionals at The DeRosa Center will provide comprehensive information on how to care for the injection site at home.
Most people can safely ice after BOTOX injections. We recommend covering an ice pack with a clean, soft towel and applying it to the injection site for 5 – 10 minutes at a time. Do not apply ice directly to the skin, as this will irritate the skin. Be sure to give yourself some time to rest after treatment and avoid strenuous activity for the remainder of the day.
Dr. DeRosa does warn patients against rubbing or pressing down on the injection site during BOTOX recovery, as this can cause the product to spread to other unwanted areas.
When will the side effects of BOTOX subside?
Most BOTOX side effects resolve on their own within 2 – 3 days. It also takes 5 – 7 days before the full results of BOTOX become visible. The product typically lasts for 3 – 4 months, but these timelines vary from person to person.
Dr. DeRosa wants to ensure the best possible results for BOTOX, which is why we create custom treatment plans based on your current needs and goals. We also make recommendations about returning for follow-up appointments as necessary. BOTOX is not permanent, so touch-ups are a great way to stay refreshed and rejuvenated long-term.
