Enhance the Natural Shape
of Your Ears

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that aims to reshape, reposition, or reduce the size of the ears for a more aesthetically balanced appearance. At DeRosa Center, Dr. DeRosa customizes each procedure to your unique anatomy and aesthetic goals, often addressing concerns such as prominent ears, asymmetry, or ear deformities. The goal is to create natural-looking results that complement your features without changing who you are.

Do I Need Ear Surgery?

You may consider ear surgery if the size, shape, or position of your ears affects how you feel about your appearance. Dr. DeRosa carefully listens to your goals and helps you decide if otoplasty is the right option to restore balance. You may be a good candidate if:

  • You feel your ears stick out more than you’d like
  • You notice asymmetry between your ears
  • You’re self-conscious about your ear shape or position
  • You’ve experienced injury or deformity affecting your ear contour

What Are the Benefits of Otoplasty?

  • Creates a more balanced and symmetrical facial appearance
  • Reduces ear prominence for a refined, natural look
  • Corrects congenital or injury-related ear deformities
  • Improves self-confidence and comfort with your appearance
  • Long-lasting, permanent enhancement with minimal visible scarring

How is Otoplasty Performed?

Your otoplasty surgical plan is tailored to your unique ear projection, cartilage shape, and facial symmetry. On the day of surgery, you’ll be comfortably positioned in DeRosa Center’s private, QUAD A-certified surgical suite. Depending on your needs, you may receive local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia to keep you comfortable.
Dr. DeRosa creates a small incision behind the ear, within the natural fold, which gives her access to the ear cartilage.

She then reshapes or folds the cartilage using precise suturing techniques, often referred to as “Mustardé” or “Furnas” methods, to reduce projection and refine the contour. In some cases, a small amount of cartilage is trimmed for improved definition. The incisions are closed with fine sutures to minimize visible scarring. Most patients return home the same day with a soft dressing to support their new ear shape.

What Are the Other Types of Ear Surgery?

Earlobe Reduction

Earlobe reduction refines and reshapes elongated or stretched earlobes that may result from aging, genetics, or years of wearing heavy earrings. Dr. DeRosa removes a small portion of excess tissue to create a more proportionate earlobe contour. The incisions are placed along the natural folds, resulting in minimal visible scarring and a balanced, elegant outcome.

Gauge Repairs

Gauge repair surgery restores earlobes that have been stretched from large-gauge piercings. Dr. DeRosa reconstructs the earlobe by excising the stretched tissue and delicately suturing the edges to reestablish the natural curve and contour. The goal is to achieve a natural appearance that allows the earlobe to heal, often making future piercings possible after recovery.

Torn Earlobe Repairs

Torn earlobe repair corrects partial or complete tears caused by trauma, heavy earrings, or accidental pulls. Dr. DeRosa performs this procedure under local anesthesia, carefully trimming the torn edges and suturing them together to restore the earlobe’s natural shape. Once healed, you can often have the ear re-pierced if desired. The result is a smooth, refined earlobe.

Why Clients Love Us

Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) FAQs:

How Old Do You Have to Be for Otoplasty?

Otoplasty can be performed once the ears have reached their full size, typically around age five or six. At this stage, the cartilage is stable enough for reshaping while still flexible, allowing for optimal long-term results. Adults of any age can also benefit from otoplasty if they wish to improve ear symmetry or reduce prominence.

Will There Be Visible Scars After Otoplasty?

Dr. DeRosa places all incisions in discreet, natural creases behind your ears, ensuring that any scars are well hidden. Over time, these small lines fade and are usually imperceptible once fully healed. With proper care, your results should look natural and virtually scar-free.

How Long Does It Take to Recover After Ear Surgery?

You can expect mild swelling and soreness for the first few days following surgery, which gradually improves within one to two weeks. Most patients return to work or school in about a week, although you’ll need to avoid strenuous activity or contact sports for several weeks. A soft headband is often worn at night to protect your results as your ears continue to heal.
